Black and white photograph of Artemesia Rural High School group, 1912-1913. When it was built in 1910, this highschool made staying in school an option for many Grey Highlands Students. Before this, with the closest highschools in located in Orangeville and Owen Sound, students had to find somewhere to board (get a room and meals with a family near the highschool) for the school week. Even with train connections making it possible to return home for weekends, the cost for tickets kept many students away from home except for special holidays. This was true for Agnes Macphail from Six Corners near Ceylon, who had to plead for two years before her parents allowed her to attend highschool in Owen Sound . Even with this new school in Flesherton -- actually the first rural highschool in Ontario -- many students boarded in town, especially during the winter. There were no school buses until 1945! Note that Agnes's younger sister Lily is in this photo. So is Kate MacMillan, who as an adult, was instrumental in starting the South Grey Museum. The group of 49 people is composed of students and teachers: Staff (rear): (left) H. Brown (right) H.S. White. Form 3 (back): WInslow Kenahan, Minerva Stafford, Ina Nitchell, Mamie McLoughry, Lena Legate, Irene Wilson, Annie MacMillan, Kate Wilcox, Zaida Lawler, Ada Wright, Hazel Allen, Dell Thurston, Lela Ellison. Form 2: Mabel Henderson, Lillian Bunt, Kate MacMillan, Hazel Shunk, Lolita Beattie, Maud Boyd, Stella Orr, Harry Field, Donald McVicar, Tommy Orr, Eva Spencer, Ruth Spencer, Vera Seeley, Odessa Walters, Elsie Wright, Valerie Stafford, Gladys White, Viola Cornfield, Murray Legate, Maurice Wright, Harvey Shunk, Preson Beattie Form 1 (Row 1): Florence Bunt, Minnie Winters, Mary Murphy, Rebecca McLaren, Adelaide Gaudin, Sadie Smart, Phronie Carson (Row 2): Winnie Seeley, Lydia Trueman, Mettie Teeter, Zella Bentham, Lilly Macphail.
The Artemesia Highschool burned in 1952. In 1953 the new Flesherton District Highschool was officially opened on the same property. This second highschool building on Campbell Street became the (1st) Macphail Memorial Elementary School in 1968 when the new , expanded highschool on the west side of #10 south of the cross roads in Flesherton opened its doors as Grey Highlands Secondary School.
