| 1907 wedding photo of Richard Allen and Laura Holman. Richard and Laura's children donated artifacts, records and a custom built display cabinet for the Museum in July 1993.
Richard 's grandparents, John Allen (1796-1859) and Mary Ann Watkins (1817-1894), his father, James Henry (1824-1899) and two uncles, John Allen Jr and Jeremiah, were some of the original black settlers in Grey Highlands, arriving in about 1850 and obtaining several separate Crown Deeds in Artemesia in 1854. John Sr. and Mary Ann were both born in Pennsylvania and settled first in King County (where their sons were born) when they crossed to Canada. All are buried in Flesherton cemetery.
Richard's mother was Ellen Gowland. He had nine brothers and sisters. Laura (1896-1967) had five siblings, her father was Henry Holman (1863-1933) ; her mother Lydia Jane Nicholson (1855-1934).
Children of Laura and Richard include Lewis, Jay, Florence (Hobbs), George, Clifford, Merle (Londry, Atkins), Lloyd, and Eunice (Friesen). Three others - Stanley, Morris and Doris - died as infants. |
