| Chamber pots like this were used as portable toilets in rural homes before indoor plumbing and bathrooms were common. The pot was kept under the bed and used if required during the night if a trip outdoors to the outhouse was too daunting. Pots were emptied in the mornings and washed clean. Chamber pots all had lids originally -- since once they had served their purpose putting a lid on helped contain any odors. Lids are often the first piece broken. In this case, there is no longer a matching lid. - Pot is made of ironstone, painted white, has a raised wheat design on it. - handle is 11.4cm and 4.4cm wide and 2.5cm thick |
