| Description |
a and b - Sock stretchers (men's) for drying and shaping woolen socks - Made of heavy wire; has hanger attached - 1 pair
Drying wet socks over a form like this was insurance that the socks dried to a predictable size and shape. Similar metal forms shaped for drying gloves are in our collections. For woolen sweaters, which were usually dried flat, the garment was shaped carefully by hand and sometimes pinned to a backing to help maintain size and shape while drying. |
