Collection Macphail Collection
Description Leather helmet, or driving hat, brown, with ear flaps and leather chin strap with buckle. Lined in rust brown flannel. Machine stitched. Chin strap is 6 inches long with seven eyelets; buckle is attached to hat on opposite side. There's a short leather strap at the back of the helmet, which closes with a dome fastener. Also a short length, fixed on both ends, on the crown. Each ear flap can be closed with a snap (dome) fastener. Behind the flap, when the flap hangs loose, is a small hole (3/4 inch diameter) at ear height, stitched like a button hole, presumably to allow the wearer to hear. The bottom back of the helmet is flared to cover the back of the neck. The note to the original catalogue card says that this hat was worn by Agnes Macphail when riding in an open buggie [or an open motor car] to protect her sensitive ears.
