Travel back to the 1800s and follow the secret slave escape routes known as the Underground Railroad in commemoration of February as Black History Month. Passage to Freedom: Secrets of the Underground Railroad tells the story of the thousands of black refugees who escaped slavery in the United States and sought freedom in Canada. Large text panels, eye-catching models, and unique maps reflect the spirit of hope that many had during their journey to the north.

Celebrating and Preserving our Past

This new, community partnered exhibit, invites you to experience strange, unusual and wonderful artifacts from our collection, and from yours as well!  We’ll keep you guessing and maybe see some objects you haven’t used (or needed) in a very long time.

What are museums all about?  Why do we collect such objects?  Will this exhibit change the way you see the Museum forever?  Perhaps not, but it will show some really cool stuff from our back room, and yours!

Obscure, Odd & Obsolete

Curiosities from the Back Room

On Display from April to September 2011

Taverns, Alcohol & Temperance in Southern Grey County

Within the walls of the tavern: bills were paid, deals were made, it served as a public place where men could meet in comfort, hosted local theatricals & church services, politics were discussed and debated, and of course the drink flowed.  They were also “the cause of all societal ills” if you were part of the Temperance movement.  In a time when it was considered safer to drink alcohol than water or milk, what was your choice?  Alcohol or Temperance?
